While use of
low-VOC materials for LEED credit is restricted to interior
paints in the current LEED Scoring system, it may be possible
to achieve credit for use of low-VOC materials under the
Innovation in Design category.
Liquid
Paint Finishes (Exterior – PVDF/Kynar/Hylar). Factory-applied
paints that contain VOC’s (e.g. PVDF/Kynar/Hylar such as
Flurocryl, Duranar, and Trinar) can be applied using
specialized equipment that captures and destroys VOC’s in the
painting process, with 95%+ efficiency. Destroying the VOC's
and not emitting them into the atmosphere prevents pollution
and ozone depletion. Such equipment is utilized by Linetec
and other environmentally-conscious finishers, and
documentation can be provided to the design professional
evidencing use of such equipment when painting a project.
Powder Paint
Finishes (Exterior). This option provides a VOC-free
coating. However, in Linetec’s opinion, there is not clear
test or field evidence that the new high-performance
fluoropolymer powder coatings achieve weatherability results
equal to that of liquid PVDF/Kynar/Hylar.
Anodize
Finishes (Exterior). This option provides a VOC-free
coating. |
