Paint Types offered by Linetec

Linetec presently offers a variety of architectural paints ranging from 70% Kynar 500® and Hylar 5000® which meets  AAMA 2605 specification, 50% Kynar® and Hylar® meets AAMA 2604 and Baked Enamels which meet AAMA 2603. The AAMA 2605 is a high performance specification made for organic coatings for architectural and heavy commercial applications. The AAMA 2603 is the lower performing specification that is typically used for interior architectural, residential or very light commercial applications. For specific performance details see our Finish Performance Comparison, comparing both paint and anodize systems.

 PVDF or 70% & 50% Kynar® and Hylar® coatings:

PVDF non-metallic, non-exotic colors generally require a two-coat process (mica colors may also fall into this category). Specialty exotic and metallic colors generally have a three or four coat process. Three coat meaning primer, topcoat and clear. Four coats include primer, barrier coat, topcoat and clear.

PVDF coatings are the most weather resistant of all finishes. These coatings are also called fluorocarbon, fluoropolymer, and trade names of Kynar 500® and Hylar 5000®. Some of the characteristics these types of finishes exhibit are outstanding resistance to humidity, color change, chalk, gloss shift and chemical cleaning; these types of finishes meet or exceed all criteria of the AAMA 2605 specification. Coraflon EX (formerly Megaflon EX)

Coraflon EX (formerly Megaflon EX) spray-applied extrusion coatings provide a colorful, high-gloss, automotive-quality finish. Coraflon not only meets all AAMA 2605 standards for PVDF finishes, but are also available in a palette of rich, vivid colors and a full range of glosses from satin to high luster. Coraflon EX coatings offer excellent adhesion to aluminum substrates. These characteristics make them an ideal choice for high-profile architectural applications where long-term aesthetics are desired.

Baked Enamel coatings:

Baked Enamels are generally a one-coat process as no primer is required. In this process the top-coat is applied directly to the material.

The characteristics of Baked Enamel coatings are different than that of PVDF coatings. Baked Enamel coatings are used primarily for interior applications where color retention, chalk, fade and weatherability is not required. While these coatings are much harder and more more resistant they do not have the weatherability of PVDF coatings. These coatings meet or exceed the specifications of AAMA 2603.

Paints applied at Linetec can be considered either Exotic or Non Exotic. Exotic colors are “ non-earth tone” colors. These colors quite often require a clear coat for pigment protection. Exotic colors are not in-house blendable. Non-Exotic would be earth tone colors, which are often blended in-house.

Mica and Metallic Coatings

Linetec specializes in the application of specialty paints like metallic and mica coatings. Paints containing metallic or mica pigment will show some variation in appearance. Getting the metallic or mica flake to lay just right for color consistency is dependant on many variables, some which can be controlled while others like material shape can not.

Color Consistency and Clear Coats

In order to ensure color consistency, it is important that material is painted in as few releases as possible. Bright or clean whites also tend to have issues in maintaining color consistency, as they require a high dry film thickness in order to maintain their color consistency. Linetec is able to reduce the color variation by applying a base coat underneath the top-coat to build film to easier achieve hide and color consistency. Clear coats are normally required for exotic and metallic finishes to protect the pigment from the sun. Clear coats are not really clear, when putting a clear coat over a light color it will change the color giving it a yellowing appearance. Applying a clear coat to a finish not requiring a clear not is not recommended.

Spattercoat

Linetec also specializes in the application of a spattercoat process. Spattercoat is achieved by first painting the under coat color over the entire exposed surface. the material is then spattered with the remaining color to give it a 3D effect. The material may have a marbled or brick like appearance.

Two-Tone Painting

One of the many services provided by Linetec is two-tone finishing, the process of painting one side of the material one color then masking it off and painting the other side a different color.

The following criteria apply to two-tone orders. Please contact Linetec to review your two-tone requirements

  • Linetec can provide two-tone finish for extrusion material
    • Flat sheet can be two-tone finished on the separate sides, however we do not two-tone finish just one side
    • Contact Linetec quoting department for information on material types other than extrusion
  • Different paint types may not be compatible on the same profile
    • Both paints require equal baking temperatures
    • When paints bake at different temperatures, one color risks burning, peeling, and / or discoloration
    • Two-tone finish may not be warranted if the paints are from different vendors
  • Dimensioned die drawings are required, which specifically indicate the interior and exterior exposed surfaces
  • Linetec cannot guarantee a straight line for split finish when colors are touching
