POWDER COATING
Advantages & Disadvantages
|
| |
Advantages of Powder Coating
-
Environmentally Friendly.
-
Powder coating does
not contain any solvents and releases negligible amounts of VOC's
into the atmosphere, resulting in minimal air pollution.
-
On large paint runs,
most powder coating
overspray that does not adhere to the part can be retrieved and
reused, significantly reducing waste.
- Hardness and
Abrasion Resistance
-
Powder coating
surfaces are resistant to chipping, cracking, and peeling. Its
hardness and
scratch resistance make powder coating an excellent option for
"high-touch" products such as handrails, entrances, store racks,
and balconies.
- Versatility
-
The options and
applications for powder coating are virtually endless. Color
selection is nearly unlimited with high and low gloss, specialty,
and clear finishes available. Texture selections range from
smooth, to wrinkled, to matte, to a rough finish.
Disadvantages of Powder
Coating
- Warranty
-
Powder coating
warranties are generally more limited and restrictive than long-
term Kynar 500®
paint warranties.
- Metallic
Coating
-
Powder coating cannot
provide as brilliant of a metallic look that is found with liquid
paints. Powder physically can hold about 30% of the metallic
flake content that liquid paint can hold.
- Touch-Up
-
Touch-up and field
repair of powder coatings are a challenge. A matching air-dry
liquid paint must be purchased , and exact match with powder
finish can sometimes be an issue.
- Small Custom
Color Jobs
-
Small custom color
orders are not cost effective due to minimum batch sizes involved
in powder manufacturing. Every custom color is prepared and ground
to order through an expensive and timely process.
- Samples/Color
Matches
-
There is no in-house
blending of powder coatings. Therefore lead-time of samples and
color matches can be up to 4 weeks unlike most liquid paint
matches which can be supplied within 48 hours.
- Orange Peel
-
Powder coatings can be more prone to orange peel than liquid paints.
